SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE

Named after a US Navy Aviator from Goldsboro, this base pre-dates the US Air Force itself. Getting its start in 1940 during the height of WWII, it was originally purposed to be a training air field for our nation’s defense. Even today it remains the only Air Force base named after a naval officer. Seymour Johnson Air Force Base also serves as the venue for North Carolina’s largest free air show, Wings Over Wayne, that takes place every odd-numbered year.
